Data provided through INSIDE Idaho originate primarily from federal, state, and local governments operating throughout Idaho. These organizations are developing and amassing a wealth of geospatial and numeric data. Individuals from these agencies have collaborated with INSIDE Idaho to provide data for this venture. It is through the data development and cooperative efforts of these agencies and individuals, and the compilation and organization endeavor of the INSIDE Idaho staff, that this site exists.

A listing of contributing agencies can be found below. Data users should be sure to check the metadata and acknowledge those agencies and individuals who are creating and maintaining these important data sets.

Publishers Report

INSIDE Idaho has the ability to automatically harvest FGDC CSDGM metadata records in XML format from metadata publishers. The program checks the required element ‘Metadata Standard Version’ [metadata/metainfo/metstdv] to make sure the value is ‘FGDC-STD-001-1998’. It also checks the 'Publisher' element [metadata/idinfo/citation/citeinfo/pubinfo/publish] to ensure that the value matches the publisher name on file for the contributing organization. Files that pass these checks are imported into our geocatalog database. Files that fail either of these checks are discarded.

If you feel like some of your metadata records aren't showing up on INSIDE Idaho see the Publishers Report.

Overview

INSIDE Idaho has the ability to automatically harvest FGDC CSDGM metadata records in XML format from metadata publishers. The web crawler/cataloger is able to collect metadata published in four ways: metadata listed on web pages, metadata stored in web-accessible folders, metadata stored in FTP sites, and metadata stored in ESRI ArcSDE geodatabases. If a username and password are required for access to a metadata publishing site, those credentials can be stored in our database.

Required fields:   Publisher, Metadata Standard Version

The program checks the required element ‘Metadata Standard Version’ [metadata/metainfo/metstdv] to make sure the value is ‘FGDC-STD-001-1998’. It also checks the 'Publisher' element [metadata/idinfo/citation/citeinfo/pubinfo/publish] to ensure that the value matches the publisher name on file for the contributing organization. Files that pass these checks are imported into our geocatalog database. Files that fail either of these checks are discarded. The process is repeated at a regular interval to ensure that the catalog is current with new and updated metadata records.

Metadata that are harvested and cataloged become an operational component of INSIDE Idaho and are available for indexing by regional and national efforts.

Methods for Exposing Your Metadata to the INSIDE Idaho Crawler/Cataloger:

  • Web Page: The crawler can scan an HTML document published on a web server. All XML documents that are linked within the HTML document are downloaded. Links to other HTML documents within the original HTML document are not followed.
  • Web Folder: The crawler can scan a directory and its subdirectories if they are exposed on a web server with directory browsing enabled. All XML documents that are found in the starting directory, and optionally subdirectories, are downloaded.
  • FTP: The crawler can scan a directory and its subdirectories if they are exposed on an FTP server. All XML documents that are found in the starting directory, and optionally subdirectories, are downloaded.
  • SDE: The crawler can scan an SDE database. XML metadata for all objects that are found within the SDE database are downloaded.
