What does this data set describe?

Title:
Historic Large Fires for Boise National Forest, Idaho for 1900 - 1997

Abstract:
This data set reflects large fires (approximately 200 acre minimum size) for 1900-1997 for Boise National Forest, Idaho.  Due to multiple fires occurring in the same area, at different times, many individual polygons are much smaller than 200 acres.  Fire location, perimeter, and size are approximate. Much variation in accuracy of spatial features, eg. fire perimeters for 1994 (Boise River Complex) were collected with aerial gps, while perimeters for much older fires were approximated from narrative accounts.  Data source/accuracy for individual fires not identified.  Attributes for some fires included recorded acres as well as ArcInfo calcualted acres, much variablility in agreement, see discussion under procedures used and limitations of data.

Procedures_Used:
Fire perimeters were compiled from a variety of sources and manuscripted on a 3/8" (1:168960) paper base map, by Bert Strom in 1993, Forest Fire Planner (retired).  Each fire was attributed with the year the and color coded for the decade, for some fires, the recorded acres was included.  Polygons were remanuscripted onto a 3/8" stable mylar base map by a cartographic technician, Gordon Nutt (retired).  The mylar map was digitized and edited in PC Arc-Info, RMS 0.03, weed 10 by Diane McConnaughey in 1993.  Additional editing and attributing was done on an IBM 340 workstation Arc-Info 6.1., weed 10.  In 1997 the fire layer was updated by Nate Lancaster to add fires occurring
after 1992.  During the update process, the REGION functionality of ArcInfo 7.1 was used, to aggregate fires into regions by year.  Most polygons/fires within a year are treated as individual elements within a region, but in a few cases they were aggregated where a fire was represented by more than 1 polygon.

Revisions:
Data was not revised until 1997.  Layer was updated to add fires occuring after 1992.  ArcInfo REGIONS were added to make the data layer easier to work with.  Regions were added that identify fires by year.

Reviews_Applied_to_Data:
Check plots were made to check for line and attribute accuracy. Some minor corrections were made features where line shifts were noticed.  Line shifting probably occurred when new fires were added or during cleaning. A few attribute corrections were also made.  A few attribute errors from the original data set were also corrected

Why was the data set created?

The data are intended to assist efforts surrounding broad-scale forest planning for analysis in fire-recovery: soil stabilization, reestablishing vegetation, and protection of other resources such as wildlife, riparian habitat, water quality, fisheries and timber. The source for digitizing was 1:168960, but resolution of line accuracy and location is much less.  The original source drawn on paper 3/8"/mile map, color coded by decade, for some fires, the recorded acres were included. No responsibility is assumed by the Boise National Forest GIS Staff in the use of these data.
